The AER Method Pilot study is an 18-week research initiative exploring how a structured combination of Pilates and aerial silks training supports women’s strength, confidence and control, both on the ground and in the air.
The study examines physical outcomes like grip strength, shoulder stability, deep core engagement and proprioception alongside lived experience factors such as confidence, body awareness, empowerment, and feeling safe while inverted.
Three groups will be analyzed. Two groups will be required to integrate both Pilates as well as aerial silks into their weekly routines. The “control” group will be a Pilates only cohort, so those taking only Pilates classes are eligible to apply.
The goal is to validate the AER Method as a research-informed , women- centered movement system and use these insights to shape future programming, education and industry standards.
We are currently recruiting participants.
Study Eligibility
- You are 18+ and not currently pregnant
- Have less than one year (preferably less than a few months) of aerial experience. Experienced aerialists are also welcome if they have been inconsistent in their training for a while and consider themselves out of practice.
- Are enrolled in an AER membership that enables you to take class a minimum of 2x a week, or are willing to enroll during course of study (discounted memberships will be available during 4 months of study).
- Can commit to consistent weekly training (2-3+ times a week) for 18 weeks and weekly journaling prompts (less than 10 minutes to complete weekly)
The Nature of the Study
This is considered a longitudinal study that begins when you enroll at AER, or upon recruitment if you are a current client. Your progress will be tracked psychologically through weekly journaling and every 9 weeks through physical testing at the studio with the AER team (3 physical tests total).
This design makes participation possible without overcomplicating the requirement to simultaneously complete the study with others. Results and client information will remain anonymous and confidential.
Applications will remain open until the studio hits capacity.
